Dear Mario, You are quite right to raise this point. Actually, I've been thinking a lot about the death penalty lately.
Perhaps you recall, I wrote a post sometime ago that all "evil" is but dysfunction or aberration of some sort. The more I examine "evil", the more convinced I become of this. I don't know if you've been following the John Karr situation lately, but he is a classic case in point. I've come to believe that one is either a sociopath, totally lacking the ability to make a conscientious decision, or a psychopath suffering from undeniable mental illness. If I hold these views, than a death penalty is inconsistent with these views. There are times, when I still feel a death penalty is appropriate but that is just an instinctive reaction to the situation. I realise that my instinctive response must be subjugated to reason. Carmo's description of the foaming mouth and gasping breath left me revolted. Perhaps becoming a mother has mellowed me. In anycase, we must always leave the doors open for change to slip in and evolve us.
