Mario Vicente Santos Pereira and Nasci Caldeira (among others) raise interesting points in relation to the bane of caste and caste associated institutions among Catholic Goans. I have been a trenchant critic of caste among Catholic Goans for the best part of five years on Goanet. In several detailed posts, I provided many reasons why caste among Catholic Goans cannot have legitimacy for any reason whatsoever.
However, I'd like to raise just two points for now. Firstly, I am pleased to note that although this issue was largely swept under the carpet in the past, it is beginning to emerge as a matter that has to be addressed however difficult such a task might be. I am therefore happy to support the suggestions currently being made to this end on Goanet. I should also like to recommend Silviano Barbosa's novel 'The Sixth Night' to Goanetters, as it portrays caste among Catholic Goans quite brilliantly besides telling a wonderful human story. The case of an individual buried in a particular place and the body then removed by others, for caste reasons, is told very poignantly in the novel and is clearly based on a true incident. Secondly, I had on Goanet, suggested to Rene Barretto who relishes World Goa Day ever so much, that it would be most helpful if in his many messages, he stressed to the Goans worldwide, the need to reject caste in its many manifestations as part of World Goa Day celebrations. Although Rene has not yet pursued my suggestion, I am hopeful he will do so soon. Minimally, I believe that his legacy would be more than assured if he very gently projected such a sentiment in the context of World Goa Day solidarity.
