Braving a Saturday full of rains, the ILUG-Goa team participated in ECAP2006, the Exhibition of Computers and Allied Products, at the Hotel Mandovi. While the crowds were lower than usual, it was interesting to see the number of young people clued in about GNU/Linux, coming up with very specific queries and issues that they had on their minds.
[Surely, this is a result of all the great work done in the field of education ... by both ILUG-Goa members and the lecturers in the colleges. It was nice to see students from the three engineering colleges GEC, PCC and RIT, showing much interest in the subject. Likewise, there were students from MES Vasco, Khandola Government College, Chowgule's, Xavier's, Pilar .. and other institutions that might have got inadvertently missed out.] GEC students often mentioned the work of Prof George Easaw... we're all going to miss him! Compared to last year, the interest among students for GNU/Linux is definitely grown. Arvind and Edgar put together an interesting demo of the power of FLOSS on a desktop (waiting to see this in more detail myself!). Fritz D'Souza of the Goa-Floss-Programmers list had his set of tips for students wanting to GNU/Linux projects. We are grateful to all the volunteers who came and lent a hand throughout the day. Let's try to meet up with as many others tomorrow too....
