Unfortunately, I am not a reader of Sunaparant, as I am not familiar with
devanagri script. But some of my friends had mentioned that Subhash
Velingkar's weekly column in the newspaper often contains disparaging remarks
about minorities. This did surprise me, as Sunaparant is edited by Sandesh
Prabhudesai, whose secular outlook was never in doubt However, I recollect
that at a meeting in Margao where Dr. Francisco Colaco & Sandesh were present,
the former expressed to the latter his views that Velingkar should not be
allowed to use the daily to air his anti-minorities feelings.

Velingkar is a fanatic RSS follower, whose postures against christians and
muslims in Goa are well known. Such people cannot generally hide their
communal feelings and hence, if allowed to express their views, these need to
be scrutinized and censored so as not to allow hurts to any community. One
would have expected an intelligent Editor like Sandesh Prabhudesai to be
cautious with Velingkar's writings moreover when his attention had been drawn
to them. If he has allowed such diatribes to continue to be printed in his
newspaper, perhaps we cannot help to have a rethink about Sandesh's secular
credentials, about which we had no reasons to doubt till recently.
