Dear Dr Giese, I fear more and more that my generation of expat Goans grows less and less concerned about Goa and certainly our progeny grows-up blissfully ignorant about Goa. I have so many friends and family in the US, UK and Canada and I feel totally disillusioned when I hear them talk. I hear scorn and contempt and perhaps relief that Goa's problems are not their own.
Expat party conversations are littered with what fancy restaurants they ate in last weekend, how much their second mortgage is costing them, how wonderful their last trip to Goa was, how terrible they had to put up with the power outages and miss CNN for a whole day while in Goa. I seldom hear them talk about initiatives or programmes or anything that would engage their commitment beyond a two-week holiday. Being of an artistic bent of mind, I mourn the loss of our architectural and art heritage, due to lack of funds and ignorance. I wish there was a way to form an organisation that would channel NRI/expat money into the conservation and restoration of heritage projects. One that would vet and fund legitimate projects undertaken by Goans.
