Dear Goanetters,

Booking your tickets online a few years ago was unheard of. Besides, you
almost always need to have a credit card to make the purchase.

AIR TRAVEL
However, while airlines were the first to offer online ticketing, it still
requires you to have a credit card. The nice think however, is that some
airlines let you even choose where you want to sit in the aircraft, after
you've bought your ticket. Tickets issued this way are simple printouts and
I've bought myself a couple of tickets this way and found it rather
inconvenient (as I don't have a credit card).

RAIL TRAVEL
While some railways such as Konkan Railway had the possibility of purchasing
tickets online, they too went the credit card only way and was generally
ignored. In 2000 or 2001, IRCTC, a railway body associated with catering &
tourism actually took the initiative to launch e-ticketing with multiple
payment options such as credit cards, debit cards and online banking funds
transfer for issuing tickets to all rail destinations in India. To purchase
a ticket, you would have to initially register (for free) and IRCTC and
sometimes your bank would charge you a small commission which would
collectively amount to Rs.50 -70 per ticket. However, given the fact that
you don't have to deal with long queues, travel to the nearest station or
pay more to a booking agent, this service has gained popularity
tremendously. i-Tickets bought are actual tickets that are couriered to your
address anywhere in India within 3 days. (For Goa its 2 days) and e-tickets
allow a printout as a ticket. I've personally vouch for this service, having
bought more than 16 tickets this way since 2002.

BUS TRAVEL
It's only recently that online bus ticketing was made possible. Redbus, a
South India based travel company that primarily operates in Bangalore is one
of the first private operators to start this service. They now offer
Bangalore-Goa bus ticketing, and the other way around is on the way. On a
lookup of their site, I was happy to note that a search for a bus revealed a
Sharma Travels Bus had a seat for me for Rs.400/- Other routes will slowly
come up too, with presently only a Goa-Pune and Goa-Mumbai option through
another private operator. All these operators also accept payments via
netbanking and debit cards which makes it convenient for those of us that
prefer debit cards to credit cards.

Perhaps its time that Goa's own Kadamba Transport Company starts issuing
ticketing or monthly passes online. The first step could start with the
opening of a website though! :-)

Have a nice day,

Clinton..
