Dear Sunil,
You are genuinely concerned with righting the
injustices perpetrated onto certain sections of
society and I commend you for that.
Gay rights is a huge election issue in the US and was
one of the Republican platforms for the last
Presidential election. Goa on the other hand is
grappling with more "bread & butter" issues of
infrastructure, health & sanitation, education,
corruption, etc and rightfully so. It will take a long
time for this issue to make it into the electoral
consciousness.
Change however does not always have to be heralded by
legislation. Change can be wrought through attitudes.
I have met Goans in America, who can be called
progressive in all respects, balk at homosexuality. I
have met Americans in America, who find homosexuality
repulsive. Ronald Regan, when confronted with the Aids
epidemic, said, if you choose to live by the sin, you
die by the sin. These were ignorant comments from a
President.
Sometimes, aggressive posturing such as demonstrations
or parades can bring about a negative effect,
especially in a society that is still very
conservative about such issues and misinformed about
them. In my opinion, it is better to bring about
change through dialogue, literature, documentaries,
movies, openness within the gay community, etc.
