More on dog meat debate: Much has appeared on dog meat in the posts over the
past two/three weeks, pro and con, savoury and unsavoury. The matter has taken
me back many, many years ago to a different DOG scene, in Goiania(Brazil) not
so conducive to excitation of salivary and olfactory glands.... but, maybe,
the lacchrymal ones..So here goes:

HOMAGE TO A MONGREL

Marcos Gomes-Catao

In the torrid heat of the mid-day sun
The madd'ning traffic flowed on the run
Mindless men driving like in a daze
Spurred by speed's contagious craze
And lo! Amidst the raging vortex
A throng of curious lookers gathered

In the middle of the avenue spread
A blithe mangy mongrel lay dead:
Prey to man's unfeeling mobility
Stuck by an abject speeding infirmity,
And, circling round it in melancholy gait
The faithful mate mourned its fate.

Oft by deeper anguish seized, afflicted
By its downed comrade lay. And prayed.
Or so it seemed. For upwards its eyes it raised
Then licked the parted friend and wailed.
There were those in the crowd that said
Tears streamed from the stricken face

Anon the heartbroken mongrel turned
But in its eyes there shone no hate
For the senseless death of its mate'
Just an uncomprehending look,a wistful stare
As if praying the crowd lay bare
The why of that criminal lack of care
As though trying to comprehend
The limitless insanity of that act.

Wordlessly the bystanders slunk away
Each possibly contrite in his own way
Shamed by that show of solidarity
Much nobler even than human amity.
Soon the brave mongrel was all alone
To shield its mate from a worse fate
“Neath wheels of other speeding slayers

And I to my thoughts left, mused
“Living being that hast no mind'
How's it that thou dost feel
More pain than the human kind?”
