Non-action against Churchill irks Cong leaders NT Staff Reporter
  www.navhindtimes.com

Panaji, Sept 26: Dissension is growing in the Congress party over the
inability of the party leadership to take action against Mr Churchill Alemao,
the South Goa Member of Lok Sabha, for his alleged anti-party activities.
A number of party workers and leaders informed `The Navhind Times’ that
failure of the party leadership would only lead to more indiscipline in the
party, which could hamper its prospects in the forthcoming general elections.
A senior Congress leader from South Goa said that the party has exposed
itself that it does not care for the discipline by not acting against Mr Alemao
despite his open defiance of the party discipline. “What more proof does one
require against the South Goa MP to act against him?” he asked.
He further said that if Mr Alemao had called Congress workers meeting why
none of the state Congress leaders were not invited by him and why did he fail
to display party banners at the venue of the meeting.
Another leader said that the party has yet again failed to show the people of
the state that it cared for intra-party discipline. “The people of the state
will now begin to think that party was “frightened” of certain people and that
it cannot dare to take action against them, for obvious reasons.”
Mr Ravi Naik, the Goa pradesh Congress committee president, has said that he
was told that the meeting organised by Mr Alemao was that of Congress workers
and no action can be taken for holding party meeting and explaining its
policies to the people.
He pleaded ignorance about the party and its leaders being criticised by Mr
Alemao at the meeting, saying that he could not read newspapers due to
pre-occupation. “I will try to read the papers to ascertain the facts,” he told
this paper.
A senior leader from North Goa said that leaders like Mr Alemao cannot
understand what real development is and try to block every activity proposed by
the government, for obvious reasons. “It is unfortunate that party has to
buckle under the pressure of these people and let them go away with the
anti-party activities,” he added.
Another Congress leader from North Goa said that the threats and criticism of
Mr Alemao has no meaning as he was not a person to be taken seriously. He
recalled that Mr Alemao had once said that he would never join the Congress
even if the sky and the earth were to meet, but changed his stand when he got
an opportunity to be with the ruling side and “reaped rich harvest”.
In another development, the Town and Country Planning Minister, Mr Atanasio
Monserrate today left for New Delhi to hold talks with the party’s central
leadership on the party affairs and the forthcoming assembly elections.
Similarly, the GPCC chief, Mr Naik also left late today afternoon for New Delhi
to hold talks with Congress high command. Mr Naik’s visit assumes significance
in view of Mr Monserrate’s visit to the national capital and the recent
development with regard to Mr Alemao’s outburst against party leaders, and
outcry from the party leaders and workers for action against him.
Mr Monserrate told this paper that he had no specific agenda but would meet
the AICC general-secretary, Ms Margaret Alva, at 8 p.m. today, adding that no
meeting was planned with Ms Sonia Gandhi. He denied having made any specific
demands.
Meanwhile sources in the party said that Mr Monserrate has promised to get
eight legislators elected on his own and that party leadership should try to
get others elected from various constituencies in the state to form the
government after the next elections.
