NON-CHRISTIAN TIATRISTS.
Further to the various writings on the above mentioned topic in this forum
and making especial mention to what Silviano Barbosa wrote thereby
indicating that he is having good knowledge of Tiatro which is really
appreciating, I feel I too must add something more. I am sure Alexinho de
Candolim the great tiatrist of yesteryears is known to everyone expecially
to those involved in Tiatro and listening to Konkani songs. He is from the
same village and same Vaddo as of mine but later on shifted his dwelling to
different Vaddo where it is now, next to the Candolim Foot-ball ground. At
an early age he got himself graduated in the complexities, complications and
difficulties in life. When he entered on Konkani Stage he was a very
seasoned man, unchallengable by anyother tiatrist of his time. Even the
great Minguel Rod and Kid Boxer were feeling small in front of him. Besides
Alexinho de Candolim there was no tiatirst that time to challenge the stage
might of the then great trio of Kid-Youn-Rod though Young known as Young
Menezes is also from the same village as of Alexinho de Candolim. Alexinho
de Candolim was a born genius and he was like one man industry
unchallengeable and unmatchable. The first show of his Tiatro he used to
stage in his locality always and from there move on to other places mainly
in Salcette where he was considered as unique. His songs has great meaning
and are based on the family life and social topics. Speaking on this genius
once, the great Goan educationist and Principal of first Goan English High
School - St. Joseph's Arpora, Bardez, the late Monsg. Philipe Neri Mendonca
popularly known as Fr. Mendonca said " Oh my God!! What a genius Alexinho de
Candolim is. If this man had little educational background he would be
really an extra ordinary man". This remark came when Fr. Mendonca listened
to one song "Mae" of Alexinho de Candolim. "Fatima Saibinn Mae Goyam" was
yet another song of Alexinho de Candolim Fr. Mendonca always used to admire
and during those days to have such comments from the great intellectual of
Goa Fr. Mendonaca means very big compliments. He died at an early age of
about 50 in his home place at his own residence. He was very well respected
in his locality and was very active in local affairs. Always well dressed
and always wielded respect from others. I did my Parochial Schooling in the
same Church School as Alexinho de Candolim did. Though he was not a perfect
musician yet he had very good musical ears. He studied basic music in his
school and was a very good choir boy. He had a very beautiful and angelic
voice and could sing in different voices. Singing with higher second voice
was his forte and for an ordinary singer to sing with him was not an easy
task. Many times I had opportunities to sing in the Church and elsewhere
devotional songs along with him. Laudate - Laudate - Laudate Maria in Latin
once in the Church we sang very beautifully. I was a very young Choir boy
in our Church that time. He was a great singer of Motets too and on Maundy
Thursdays and Good Fridays he used to join our Choir in singing Motetes in
our Church. I could not find anyone in our Village to match his Motet
singing capacity. What a marvellous singer he was. Some of his songs
recorded on Panjim Radio Station "Emisora de Goa" during the Portuguese time
are priceless ones especially "Khottecho Bhikari", Dadlea tum adhartaI
vhoddli chuck" ani "Bhaile Rogtachea forsan uddonakai". When I got an
opportunity to read his songs book hand written by him, I went mad to know
the quality of his songs. He was a very daring man and to put forth his
viewpoint he would not only speak forcefully but also fist forecefully. For
example, once he sang a song in praise of "Dadlo" where he lowered the
status of a woman. Then as an opposition to this song, Kid Boxer sang his
song "Ostori" where he raised the status of a woman to the pedestal and
brought the level of a man to a secondary rung. Alexinho de Candolim was in
the Hall (Mattou) at Mapusa listening to this songs by sitting on his chair.
When Kid Boxer finished his song, Alexinho de Candolim went straight to
Kid Boxer behind the Stage and without any hesitation gave such a powerful
slap on the face of Kid Boxer that everyone was stunned. Then Alexinho de
Candolim told Kid Boxer that it is "Dadlo" that is higher and NOT Ostori
and next time take care. When this news went to yet another great Goan and
Romansi Writer Damaciano Caridade, he wrote in his last Romans titled "Eden"
that both Alexinho de Candolim and Kid Boxer are guilty of making Dadlo
higher than the Ostori and vice versa and added that both these singers must
apologise to the people publicly for making wrong statements. If this
apology does not come then Damaciano Caridade said he will write another
Romans strongly criticising the view points of Alexinho de Candolim and Kid
Boxer. Regretfully soon after his threat, Damaciano Caridade expired and
never survived to punish Alexinho de Candolim and Kid Boxer.
Alexinho de Candolim did some of the wonderful things for the Konkani Stage
as none did during those days. He is on record to introduce Hindu Tiatrists
on Konkani Stage first time. This was about 65 years back as per my record.
Kanta Divkar and Kamal from Candolim and Roglo Naik from Calangute were
some of the few Hindu Tiatrists he introduced to Konkani Stage. That they
were able and capable artistes he came to know when he saw them acting in
Marathi Nattoks and in fact they were really excellent ones. Fortunately at
an early age I saw two of them Kanta Divkar and Kamal acting on the stage in
one of the Tiatros of Alexinho de Candolim.

I am really proud of these Non-Christian Tiatrists of Goa. I want to add
Shrirang Narvenkar from Mapusa to the list..
How these non-Christian artistes change their accents and give out such
great performances that it is almost impossible to recognize them as
non-Christians.
Way back when I first saw the acting of the then youthful, slim, beautiful
and sexy Goan Tiatrist Roshan (I didnt know her name then) on stage, I was
really quite impressed with her. So after the show backstage, I asked Prince
Jacob who that beautiful heroine was? And Jacob said Dont you know
Roshan? I was completely flabberghasted. Roshan was a fantastic actress.
