Hi Des I reckon there is no alternative to access to the Panjim records office now. I was in the same dilemma as you last April, and asked the archivist in Panjim the same question as I was willing to pay for a service. He did warn me however that, there could be dubious offers of service for money and that authenticity was only possible through a personal search. I believe he is right on this.
I am not sure when I might be able to undertake a personal search going back several generations to at least the start of the pre-Portuguese era but I live in hope! What is clear is that, a combination of Church records and Panjim records need to be examined personally. There are gaps in both sets of records.
