Issue No. 5/2006 Sept. 2006 Dear Members, There was a lull since our last newsletter whilst our Council Members were working together to organise and celebrate World Goa Day on 26.8.06. For World Goa Day we conveyed our congratulations to the World Goan Organisations and enlisted our support for the formation of the Alliance of World Goan Organisations. 1. World Goa Day This function took off the ground or rather, took to the grounds of the MI as a Goan Food Festival. It was heartening to see people from all walks of life being with us to enjoy our cuisine and making merry under a clear moonlit night. Yes, the heavens even spared us from the rains. The atmosphere was beautiful with streamers of coloured lights, palm leaves and floral décor on food stalls and tables. Goan musicians Tony Remedios and Jam Sounds played Goan tunes followed by dance music for the rest of the night. Our Youth performed a fabulous Portuguese dance and the older members of our community sang their hearts out for the Mandos. It is gratifying to say that all members of our community participated in different ways by sponsorships, donations in cash and food dishes, and without whom this function would not have been possible. Thank you members. 2. Other Past Events Youth Cookery Demonstration The kids enjoyed helping our demonstrators, Charlene, Samantha and Kayla prepare tasty goodies. Thanks to Mr. Neil Ribeiro for sparing his time to come to Mombasa and give us a talk on Financial Advice on 21.7.06. 3. PATRON SAINT OF GOA According to church official records the Patron Saint of Goa is St. Catherine of Alexandria on whose Feast Day 25 October 1510, Goa was conquered by the Portuguese under the command of Alfonso de Albuquerque. However, Goans have always honoured St. Francis Xavier as their Patrol Saint after he was canonized several years after the conquest. In recent years, Blessed Joseph Naik Vaz has been honoured as co-Patron of the See Cathedral in Old Goa. 11. Goa News in Brief A major crisis is facing Goas age old institution, the Communidade. The future of the communidades depends on the government plan to introduce an amendment to the code that regulates the system which could result in the end of gaunkaries of Goa popularly known as communidades. 12. On Holiday Mrs. Juliet Picardo our oldest member is on holiday with her family in New York. We wish her good health and an enjoyable holiday. ************ ********* ********* **** > Brenda Abranches Hon.
