Xavier's Free Health Camp for the Elderly The Centre for Studies and Support in Ageing, St. Xavier's College, Mapusa, organized a Free Health Camp for the Elderly, recently, on the occasion of World Elders' Day at St. Jerome's Church Hall, Mapusa.
The camp began at 7.30 a.m. with a team of doctors from Goa Medical College, Bambolim conducting the check up. The team consisted of Dr. Edwin Gomes, Dr. Shraddha Mahale, Dr. Siddhi Pandit, Dr. Shubhada Mandrekar, Dr. Manisha Naik, Dr. Vedha Pednekar and Dr. Tulshi Kothwale, besides a nurse from KLES Nursing College, Sr. Charlene Rodrigues. Biocon, a pharmaceutical company, sponsored free testing kits and equipment for Blood Sugar testing and Sensitometer test. The company also provided services of their representatives, Mr. Joaquim Alvares and Mr. J.M.Vivek Gomes. The camp offered checking of Blood pressure, Blood sugar levels, Naturopathy besides a general checkup. The camp was open to elderly from all walks of life. It benefited 77 persons, in the age range of 45 yrs to 84 yrs. There were persons from Mapusa, Parra, Calangute, Uccassaim and surrounding areas. It was found that almost 60% of the people had diabetes while some were aware of their sugar levels, others were surprised to find out about their diabetes. Three of the individuals had levels above 450.
