Folks,

I just cannot figure out this debate on Goanet about 'HINDU MASS'. What
does this mean. I have lived in a lot of different places in India. When
my father was transferred to his batttilon's regimental centre in Nasirabad,
south of Ajmer,(Rajasthan) very often we used to go to a nearby village for
sunday mass. Most of these villagers were converts. Shoes were left
outside, as in Hindu temples, women wore the gungat (covering the face with
palo of sari). The priest actually had to open the gungat to offer
communion. Is this a Hindu Mass? aarti was performed for the benefit of
these people.

very recently went to Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh) and attended a mass. We had
to sit on the floor, mass was in Hindi and again aarti performed. How do
you call this a Hindu mass.

Everywhere in India, we have masses in English, except in my village Betim.
I had an altercation with a priest, and he said,' this is Goa and the
language is Konkani, so the mass will be Konkani'. You can learn the
language. 12 years I've lived in Mumbai, first at Colaba then on Malabar
Hill. Never once there was a mass in Marathi. Lived in Gujarat, no mass in
Gujarathi.

When MotherTheresa was beatified in Rome, Bengali girls danced and sang in
Bengali. Is this being Hindu. In my opinion all relgions are the same, how
we chose to follow it depends on us.

Regards
Ana Maria de Souza-Goswami
