"The gallery's greatest achievement is that it has become a city
landmark, and a temple of art." -- Adi Jehangir, speaking about the
Jehangir Art Gallery at Kala Ghoda, on the occasion of its fiftieth
year in existence.
This prestigious gallery was built as a result of a generous grant of
Rs 250,000 from Sir Cowasjee Jehangir in 1952. Adi Jehangir, present
chairperson of the art gallery, spoke about how this institution
manages to draw art lovers from every section of society, who
appreciate art, even though they do not intend to buy it.
The gallery is a non-profit organisation that offers exhibitions at
low rates. It is meant to encourage young, upcoming artists.
Sometimes, due to excess demand and shortage of space, it takes up to
four years to book space for an exhibition as the gallery can only
accomodate 300 exhibitions in a single year. Jehangir also believes
that over the years, art lovers have increased manifold but cannot say
the same about buyers -- due to the steep rise in the prices of art
pieces. However, the number of visitors to the gallery has been more
