Roland seems to be unduly concerned with the Russian mafia.
It should be reassuring to know that we have our own mafia including some
of Goa's Catholic politicians who rule with money obtained through
smuggling, land conversion, extortion (football donations) and just plain
old muscle. Hopefully these "patriotic" politicians will provide an
effective counter balance to the foreign mafia.
The Russians have been kept down for too long. With their new found oil
and gas wealth they are exerting their influence not just by buying real
estate in Goa or Dubai but even amassing shares in strategic Western
institutions like EADS the parent of Airbus Indsutries and maker of European
defence equipment.
Every country has its mafia or organised crime syndicates. Even the
world's number two economy Japan has its yakuza. They are an integral part
of society that can never been eliminated but only at best be kept in check.
Let us strengthen our institutional machinery including the CBI so they do
their job and let the law take its course.
