Roland,

Don't forget he also worked long years as a Military Chaplain and must
have imbibed the culture. Gentlemen officers are given to issuing
"summons" (and "marching orders" when times are appropriate!) I had
abundant helpings of that culture not only from dear Padre Alfredo but
also from my own father, who was an Indian army doctor.

Despite, your uncle was a through and through gentleman. I know, it was
during his vicariate that I was closest to the church ... assisting his two
Asst. Parish Priests, Fr. Antonio Fernandes of Cuncolim and Fr. Manuel
Lobo of Saligao, both close friends then, with assorted clerical work,
like writing the Baptismal registers. When we think of a few bad apples,
the likes of Fr. Araujo, Fr. Barbosa, Fr. Frederico Alvares spring to mind
in contrast.

Enjoyed, as usual, reading your memories. How I wish my worthy neighbours
would've read what you (and some friends who once lived in this locality,
now in Portugal, in private e-mails) wrote. Your description was apt. The
flavour
unmistakeably familiar! ;-)

Regards, Valmiki
