Dear Selma,

Interesting observation! Indeed, you raise a very
profound and complex issue in speech and language
development. Of course, even if your observation is
sound, n of 1 would not be enough to draw any strong
inference. However, regarding the possible
explanations that you suggest, comparing phonetic
complexity of languages is a thorny matter, in
general. And there does not seem to be much of an
issue about closeness to human vocal sounds,
regardless of whether a language is older or newer.
Infants tend to learn their native languages, on an
average, at about the same rapid pace, i.e. from
babbling at 6 months to full sentences by 3 years.

The one thing that might be interesting in your case
is to know what language your daughter was exposed to
in the first year of her life, because it is that
language that she would most likely learn faster.
Infants become perceptually tuned to their mother
tongue as early as 6 months of age. Indeed, they
become much better tuned to what is called "Motherese"
or infant-directed speech that all mothers and
caretakers use when communicating with their babies.

Was your Motherese based on Konkani or English?

Cheers,

Santosh
