I have read that the Catholic Church is at the present time struggling
with the concept of Purgatory and the view is that there is no such
dimension. If that is the case, then the souls of the departed have
gone either to heaven or hell (if these exist, too!). If that is so,
they have no need of our prayers, we have need of theirs.
Or you may take the view of Revelations that the souls are resting
prior to The Rapture and final judgement. In this case too, their fate
will be decided according to the The Lamb's Book of Life. In this view
also, prayers are of no consequence. The person has lived life by his
own free will and decisions and must enjoy the results or suffer the
consequences as the case my be.
