Fred, Don't you remember the time when in the 70s, the name of Vasco Da Gama was changed to 'SAMBHAJI'? What a joke that was! I think only Editor Madhav Gadkari of the Marathi daily Gomantak, used it!
I have used PANAJI only on postal addresses and just to ensure that the mail gets delivered to our Panjim address. Other than that, it has always been Panjim. In Konkani, it has always been "Ponnjey". In my opinion, PANAJI does not come close to the way we pronounce it in Konkani. I fail to understand the thinking behind 'nationalizing' the names of cities. One still hears people use Bombay and Madras. I heard an interview on BBC, where a noted Kannada writer Ananthamurthy, who supports the name change, told the interviewer that the local people call the city Bengaluru, anyway. He admitted that the name change would not benefit the city in any special way. He mentioned that it is a Kannada practice to add 'RU' to the end of any name! Hope none of our Goan politicians get any stupid ideas of changing any names, other than their own!
