Dears, I believe one uses the name as appropriate. To the bus conductor it is 'Ponnje', to the Postman it is 'Panaji' to the Portuguese it is "Pangim" and to most people residing in the town, it is 'Panjim' The PANJIM Municipal Council is now th Corporation of the City of PANAJI. One of its continuing participatory programmes is "Together for PANJIM"
The name of my own home town has changed from Mapsa to Mapuca, to Mapusa and now to Mhapsa. One ward of the twon was once inhabited by the 'Carrasco' clan and was known as "Carasco vaddo".Hardly anyone in "Karraswada" today knows this. Etymologists in a distant century may link it to sale of 'Charas' [Marijuana] or "Kharrem" [dried salted fish]. The names of villages ending with 'lim' are basically from the ancient Kannada names [ Goa was part of the Karnataka -based kingdoms from Chalukyas to Bijapuris and Sondekars] e.g. Benaulim was Bandh halli, Sanquelim was Sakh halli and Siolim was Shiva halli. So also Sancoale was Shankh halli. One could have a series of inconclusive debates on this subject. In fact, Goanet has had a few already. Viva Goa.
