PRESS RELEASE Dr Harish Shetty's lecture for PTAs on How to deal with mental health of students
Dr Harish Shetty, a leading psychiatrist from Mumbai, will deliver a lecture for the teachers and parents in Panaji on Sunday morning on how to deal with the mental health problems of school children. Dr Shetty, who has organised a movement in Mumbai through the PTAs, will speak on the 'Role of PTAs in Mental Health and Learning Disabilities of Students'. The lecture is organised by the Parents Teachers Association of the Peoples High School from Panaji, from all the PTAs from the state. Dr Shetty has recently been instrumental in getting a court order issued to all the schools in Maharashtra to follow a different teaching pattern for the students having learning disability, which exists among 30 to 40 per cent students in the classroom. During his lecture, he would also throw light on this issue. Dr Shetty and his colleagues in the Bombay Psychiatric Society have recently introduced a first ever Refresher Course for School Counsellors, with SNDT as a partner. He has also recently trained 2500 municipal school teachers, besides conducting 500 workshops for parents, teachers, judicial officers and even police officials all over the country. Dr Shetty has also trained thousands of professionals and social activists while personally working with the victims of the Marathwada earthquake, Kandla cyclone and riot-affected in Gujarat. He has been actively working with personalities like Julio Rebeiro, B G Deshmukh, Asghar Ali Engineer and Ram Punyani. Dr Shetty is a visiting faculty member at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences and one of the 17 young mental health workers by the World Health Organisations. He has also founded an organisation 'Maitri' that works with families affected by mental illness besides training medical personnel. The lecture, open for all the parents and teachers, will be held at the Surlkar Hall of the Peoples High School at Mala in the city at 10 am.
