Dears, This is with reference to the three "Columns" and one comment that appeared in a single "Digest' of Goanet on 10 Nove. 2006! ............................................................................... 2. Either CRZ or just CRY! (Miguel Braganza) 3. HEART-TO-HEART: Better Straight Than Sorry (Ethel Dacosta) 4. Maddel or Caju ? Salcete or Bardez ? (CARMO DCRUZ) 7. Is Melinda better than Gomant? (Cecil Pinto) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The common thread in all the three columns is to state the truth and damn those who would shy away from it! The statement "Speak up and be counted!" implies that those who do not speak up do not count at all....except in the silence of the "Voting Chamber" and the EVM or ballot paper and the palpable tension of the "Counting Hall" where every vote counts. "Viva Goa.Say it with feni." was added to my Yahoo "Signature" when the Development Commissioner of Goa, Mr. J.K.Daddoo began the process of getting "Geographical Indication" registrered for Cashew FENI for Goa on the lines of TEQUILA for Guajadalaria Province of Mexico or SCOTCH for Scotland or CHAMPAGNE for France. It is a pity that leading Feni bottlers and exporters dragged their feet [more than even the Government agencies involved!] and, till his inevitable transfer out of Goa, the application for Feni G.I. remained an immaculate virgin...on the verge, but not in! Viva Goa. Miguel
................................................ From: Cecil Pinto <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Is Melinda better than Gomant? Ask Ubaldin Aunty from Majorda when she last went to Bangalore and she will reply, "Bengalooru?" The point being countries, cities, towns, villages and streets worldwide have their name changed for various reasons; political, linguistic, cultural, commercial - or sometimes just to reflect changing realities. Why everyone gets their panties in a knot when a major name change is announced is beyond me. In fact we should give due recognition to demographic changes when renaming a city. Decades back, when they tried to rename Vasco as Sambaji Nagar, it didn't work. But maybe today Wada Sambhar will be an appropriate name for Vasco. The sheer number of South Indian settlers, along with their ubiquitous eateries, warrants such a change in name. Vasco is a Portuguese name that bears no connection to the city's current populace or character. Yes character, that's the word that was evading me. A city, village or street has a certain character and the re-naming should reflect that character. If Goa itself decides to go back to one of its former names we could be Goparashtra, Govapuri or Gomant. The Greeks Pliny and Ptolomy called it Nekanidon and Melinda respectively. And during the Kadamba rule it was refered to as Kalyanigudi "abode of happiness". Somehow I like simple 'Goa', but who am I to decide? Let the new settlers do that! ------------- The humour column above appeared in Gomantak Times dated 9th November 2006 =======- From: "Miguel Braganza" Subject: [Goanet] Either CRZ or just CRY! The Government of India came up with what was believed to be a simple, straight-forward notification on 20 February, 1991, entitled "Coastal Regulation Zones" and issued under the Environmental [Protection] Act, 1986 . The all important 'High Tide Line' or HTL is defined as 'the line up to which the highest high tide reaches at Spring Tide'. =========================================================== The above article appeared in the November 3, 2006 edition of Gomantak Times, Goa ------------------------------ From: "Ethel Dacosta" Subject: [Goanet] HEART-TO-HEART: Better Straight Than Sorry Lourdes could teach a few deserving lessons to the upstarts who believe speaking your mind for what you believe, is the language of defeat. This is one lady who has no intention of stopping. Way to go, girl. The Ethel Da Costa column at: http://www.goanet.org/index.php?name=News&file=article&sid=492 ==================================================== The above article appeared in the November 5, 2006 edition of the Herald, Goa------------------------------ From: "CARMO DCRUZ" Hi Miguel, I noted your tag-line with interest: Viva Goa.Say it with feni. MIGUEL BRAGANZA, Mhapsa Horticulturist/ Editor BTW what kind did you exactly mean - Maddel or Caju ? We Shastikars, who always drink in moderation (to our health of course !) prefer our neat Maddel or with a little soda - The Caju smell lingers longer and that makes many Bardezkars smell like bebdos !
