Hi Aristo Thanks for your response which was, as ever, very thoughtful and informative, especially about the conundrums in subcontinental India and elsewhere. This in turn immediately prompted further thought in me and about which I may write later.
Isn't it really nice to civilly exchange ideas to learn something afresh on Goanet instead of having someone persist on the chimera of "true knowledge" and also be constantly critical of posts on anything and everything under the sun without ever adding to our knowledge in an article of some originality? Re our brief discussion, there are some interesting parallels on how terminology for minorities in the Goan Diaspora has evolved over recent decades. While the words black and white as descriptors but also as political terms in relation to power have taken root, curiously, the words brown or yellow have not (at least in the UK). In their place are the words Asian or Chinese that cover a very wide spectrum of peoples, just as olive skinned people are generally referred to as Mediterranean or Middle Eastern. Hopefully, with increased miscegenation by choice, (especially in the UK), but also I think increasingly in Canada, there will be no need to refer to skin colour or 'racial' features at all. DNA testing for evidence of worldwide mongrelisation is hopefully also helping in this direction. Incidentally, I have now developed a new interest in looking at DNA evidence in relation to Goa. Any info/advice on this issue will be most welcome to me from fellow Goanetters.
