Mario says: I KNOW from my own friends and experiences that East Indians are indistinguishable from Goan and Mangalorean Catholics. -- I beg to differ. All three communities have "distinguishable" traits and characteristics. I did a piece on Bombay's Christians in the mid-70s for the Sunday edition of Free Press Journal for Christmas. I talked to many people in the three communities and members from each community specifically mentioned that they are separate in their own little ways. The Marathi East Indians speak is always "different" from the Marathi the Hindu Maharashtrians speak. For another assignment for Free Press Journal, I visited some areas in the Chembur-Trombay area. I travelled the "Rice route", the name given because of the rice available in the black market during the ration cards (though they are still in use, I believe) days. I have always visited the predominantly East Indian villages from Bandra to Vihar and talked to lot of people. The East Indians food habits vary from Goans and Mangaloreans. Their modes of dressing differ from Goans and Mangaloreans. They are proud of their own heritage, customs, traditions and legacy.
