Many popular write-ups on the prehistory of Goa claim that the land of Goa is referred to as Gubi in an inscription on a Sumerian clay tablet by King Gudea of Lagash. Actually, most of these descriptions, including the one provided by the Goa State tourism department mistate the name as Gubio. But it appears that there is no indication that Gubi stands for Goa. In fact, archeologists who have conducted extensive research on the cuneiform writings of Sumer suggest that this land might be either an important trading post on the banks of the Nile, now a little village called Qift, or some ancient town near Muscat.
