CONCERN FOR THE ELDERLY
The Two-Day Conference on "Concern for the Elderly: Society's Responsibility" was inaugurated at the International Centre, Goa, Dona Paula on 24th Nov. 2006, at the hands of Mr. Subhash Shirodkar, Minister for Social Welfare & Panchayat. During his address, he congratulated St. Xavier's College for this initiative and offered all the help that was required to make this venture successful. He said that he was very happy to see the youth present at the Conference and their concern for their Elderly. He stressed that all educational institutions should take up similar projects meant to help people from all walks of life. He spoke about the various schemes the govt. of Goa has implemented for senior citizens specially the scheme known as UMID. Brig. Nevis Braganza who was the Guest of Honour said the International Centre Goa, was privileged for association with St. Xavier's College in this project. Dr. P.V.Ramamurthy , Hon. Director of the Centre for Research for Ageing, Dept. of Psychology , S.V.University, Tirupathi delivered the keynote address. He said that this was another red letter day for St. Xavier's for this noble task of serving the elderly by starting the Centre for Studies and Support in Ageing. "Old age is not a disease or disability. As one grows in age, one also grows in maturity and wisdom"- he added. In his address Prof. Newman Fernandes, Principal of St. Xavier's College, said that St. Xavier's is not an island, but is fully involved with the community. He congratulated the students and teachers for their involvement in this Centre dedicated for studies in ageing and support activities for the elderly. He added that this experience will help all the participants to age gracefully as well as to be sensitive to the needs of the elderly. Ms. Ubaldinha Noronha, Coordinator of the Centre for Studies and Support in Ageing and Coordinator of this Conference, expressed gratitude to all the delegates and thanked them with special words of gratitude to Prof. P.V.Ramamurthy, Prof. D.
