6. Maid situation in Gulf (Cecil Pinto)
Based in the Gulf does not mean that you are living in luxury.............

We're based in the UAE and did a bit of checking on formalities/expenses for
bringing in a maid, recently. Here's what we were told:
Rs 6000 to be paid to the immigration authorities in Mumbai (one-time)
AED 4800 to be paid to consulate in Dubai, that comes to nearly Rs 58,000
(annual)
AED 900 for one-way ticket to come in, about Rs 11,000, two-way ticket
usually once in two years, that's AED 1800 or more, depending on type of flight
and airline, (direct to Goa, Indian Airlines etc)
AED 200 for medicals and visa, annually
Plus food, medical bills (this is very expensive, most of us come back home
for this), clothes, weekly offs, telephone calls to India etc, all other
expenses
House rents in Sharjah average Rs 25,000 per month, the maid doesn't pay for
accomodation
The formalities and ticket alone cost almost Rs 72,000 each year, add to that
Rs 60,000 towards salary @ Rs 5000 per month, that's 1.32 lakh rupees each
year, in addition to living expenses.
Average salaries here are about AED 4000 for a reasonably good job for
accountants and even for journalists in some organisations.
Hope this throws some light on the issue.
  thanks.
