NATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON SUICIDE AT XAVIER'S

The Centre for Suicide Prevention and Research, Abbé Faria Post Graduate 
Department of Psychology of St. Xavier's College is organizing a two day 
National Symposium on "Suicide Attempt: A Cry for Help" on 30th November and 
1st December 2006 at St. Xavier's College, Mapusa, Goa. The symposium is 
being organized to identify the psychological and neurobiological causes of 
suicidal behaviour, to understand the cultural inadequacies and to promote 
preventive measures.

The Symposium will be inaugurated by the Honourable Chief Minister of Goa 
Shri. Pratapsingh Raoji Rane on 30th November 2006 at 10:00 A.M., who will 
also release the Abstracts of the symposium. The key note address will be 
given by Prof. Shrinivas Bhatt, Psychiatrist, Manglore, Karnataka. The 
inaugural function will be followed by expert lecture sessions and paper 
presentations on various related topics.

Dr. Anand Pandurangi, Psychiatrist from Dharwad, Karnataka will be speaking 
on 'Teen Suicide', Dr. Ashish Srivastav, Psychiatrist, Goa will be speaking 
on 'The Neurobiology of Suicidal Behaviour' and Dr. K. Kumar clinical 
psychologist from MAHE will be speaking on 'The psychology of Suicidal 
Behaviour'.

Besides, paper presentations, poster presentations, role play and a session 
on experiences of a suicide survivor will also be organized. A panel 
discussion will also be held on the topic 'Suicide Prevention'.

The valedictory programme will be held on 1st December 2006. Dr. John 
Baptista Fernandes, Principal, Government College of Arts, Science and 
Commerce, Sanquelim will be the Chief Guest for the programme.
