Just by way of an observation, generally, no one in a queue here (UK) would
deign to correct someone else over a pronunciation but may try to be
helpful, especially, if the sales woman might not understand what was
sought.
Your example reminds me of this situation in East Africa where some hoity
toity (spelling?) Goan Bamon women would deem it necessary to correct
educated other people, over pronunciation, even when totally illiterate
themselves, (as discovered by me later).
I hope you do run into the said woman again to give her a piece of your
mind. Was the encounter in the rather drab, supposedly largest shopping mall
in the world in Minneopolis?
