Hi Cornel,
I thought I would be reading your reaction to Tony Blair's recent speech
exhorting British minorities to assimilate into the main stream as reported by
the BBC news. In fact that to me was the thrust of the Dutch law, though it
was politically incorrect to say so. Hence the Dutch message was camouflaged in
the Burka as a security risk.
At a recent Indian party I asked the ladies, all of whom were dressed in
sarees, what they thought of the European thinking. They (the Indian women)
all agreed that immigrants should assimilate in their new society - including
in their attire.
In my dealing with Indian women, the women's saree ban is not an affront to
Indian women. It is an affront to some Indian men, whom I have encountered,
who insist that their wife wear only the saree when seen in public in the USA.
I think the Burka law or Blair's exhortation may / will silently empower
immigrant women in their new home.
Those who have followed my past writings will know that by assimilating in a
new society, one does not loose out one'[s own culture and values. One merely
expands one's horizons. We expect our children / the next generation of
immigrants to bridge the two cultures. Why not their smart parents?
