I was not fortunate enough to have met Pedro Adao, but from what is
written about him, Goa seems to have been blessed with his tenure,
short though it might have been.
Even in the corrupt India and hopefully Goa of today, there are fine
men, sorrowfully few, who stand out as a beacon of light and hope in
the darkness that surrounds them.
I have met a few such, but one comes readily to mind. Sanjay Pande a
bright young IPS officer in Bombay who held the position of Deputy
Commissioner of Police, Economic Offences Wing in the mid-nineties. He
was a prodigy and admirer (like many with his ideals) of Julius
Ribeiro who passed through the portals of the Bombay Police much
before Sanjay did.
All the big guns of corrupt politicians and their gangster nexus were
aimed at Sanjay. Yet he never wavered in the discharge of his duty
come what may. Whether it was his investigations in the multi crore
leather scams of Bombay or whether it was helping a poor man to get
justice from the law, Sanjay delivered. Even though he held a
relatively junior rank in the police hierarchy, Sanjay was afraid of
nobody. Not the politicians, not his corrupt bosses and certainly not
the most deadly lawbreakers. The old British founders and their early
Anglo-Indian and upright Indian successors of the Bombay police would
have been proud of Sanjay Pande.
May his ilk like that of Pedro Adao, survive and thrive.
Roland.
