Goan mining tragedy was 'disaster waiting to happen' 18 Dec: Metal Bulletin (UK). By Gilbert Lobo. A search operation to retrieve the bodies of seven miners crushed by a landslide at the Tollem iron ore mines in Goa on December 9 has so far managed to recover just two bodies … The mine, owned by Timblo Group, was ordered by the Supreme Court to close down two years ago, but continued to work on temporary permits, according to an environmentalist and member of the Supreme Court's empowered committee. "It was a disaster waiting to happen," he said. "Many more mines are equally dangerous... they are mining deeper and deeper in view of the high prices of ore." There are just two officials supervising mines safety in Goa, he added. "Most of the time they are in courts fighting various cases," he said … Prices of Goan ore are $40-50 per tonne, up from around $15 per tonne four years ago. -- FN M: 0091 9822122436 P: +91-832-240-9490
