Teen gains attention for research on stocks By Julie Greene, Cocoa Beach
Who would have thought that using a sports analogy would lead to a possible breakthrough in forecasting stock prices?
Fifteen-year-old Jason D'Cruz did and it's paying off in gaining him international recognition in the artificial intelligence community.
While most teens and adults will be spending the days leading to Christmas buying gifts and making plans, Jason, a parishioner at Ascension Catholic Church in Melbourne, will be in Pune, India, presenting a research paper on his theory at the Indian International Conference on Artificial Intelligence Dec. 20-22.
Jason's paper, "Using Chaos and Complexity Theory and the Design of Experiments to Forecast Stock Prices: Tools of Artificial Intelligence," was selected for presentation and publication in the conference proceedings because of its radically different approach to forecasting next-day stock prices and the high level of accuracy resulting from the method.
Jason, a sophomore in the International Baccalaureate program at Cocoa Beach Junior/Senior High School, has been working on stock market-related science research projects for the past three years, with assistance from faculty advisers at Florida Institute of Technology. Among those credited with co-writing the paper is professor Muzaffar Shaikh, head of the department of engineering systems, who mentored Jason in the design of experiments methodology.
