St. John's University, New York, in collaboration with the Diocesan Centre
for Social Communications Media (Goa), is organizing a Conference on
"Information and Communication Technologies and Development" at Hotel
Mandovi, Panjim, from 4th to 6th January, 2007.
The Conference, which will be inaugurated by His Excellency the Governor of
Goa, Shri S.C. Jamir, will have a plethora of Resource Persons, including
Dr. Kevin Rioux and Dr. Basilio Monteiro, both Professors of Communications
at St. John's University, Dr. Jack Phelan, Professor of Communications and
Media Studies at Fordham University, New York, Dr. Ashok Jhunjhunwalla,
Professor at IIT, Chennai and Board member of several Telecom and IT
companies in India, Dr. K. Subramanian, Deputy Director General of the
National Informatics Centre, Ministry of Communications & Information
Technology, New Delhi, Dr. Peter Ronald D'Sousa, Co-Director of the
Institute for Comparative Democracy, New Delhi and others.
Among other things, the Conference will attempt to explore what true
development is and how Information and Communication Technologies should
promote genuinely human and socio-economic development. India's rapid
development is inextricably linked to ICTs. This is the right time to
examine critically whether the eruption of ICTs is indeed promoting human
flourishing and liberating the human potential of our people or it caters
only to a quantifiable, "lifeless" development. Researchers, Educators,
Students and ICT people will be attending the Conference.
