Henrique,

Mine is a Goan Catholic Name given to me at my Baptism. It is the masculine form of the Christian feminine name Carmen. It may also be interpretted that I am named after "Nossa Senhora do Carmo" - (i.e. Our Lady of Carmo) - name of shrines in Macau and Southern Portugal where there was an apparition of Our Lady to a boatload of fishermen distressed at sea during a storm. Since my dad was a seafarer who visited Macau, and since my grandfather was named after the holy shrine in Macau, my cousin Carmo Correia and myself were given the name Carmo. We do not owe any allegiance or have any affinity for a poor, backward country in Western Europe, just because we have that first name.

As for my last name there should be no hint of its Portuguese origins in the current anglicized form.

Originally De La Cruz = meaning OF THE CROSS in Espanol (Spanish),
it was metamophosized to Da Cruz as my parents were citizens of Lo Estado Da India (i.e. Goa) and was then Anglicized to D'Cruz when my Dad sought employment in British India

So with my first name and last name in its current form, I am an American Citizen now, who traces his heritage to The Great Country of India which has a rich ancient civilization, with a very a rich history, which first developed the concept of zero among a myriad of innovations and which is today a major player in the global high tech industry. Also as a distinguished national level hockey player from India (remember we won eight Olympic Hockey Gold medals and one hockey world cup in the last century - how many soccer Olympic golds or world Cups has Portugal won BTW ?) and an accomplished alumnus of India's elite Indian Institute of Tecnology (IIT) which were founded as a vision of Pandit Jawarhalal Nehru (who was also instrumental in driving the poor Portuguese out of my native Goa), I do not owe any of my career sucesses to one of the poorest and most technologically backward country in in Western Europe ! (Believe me, I have been there and toured Portugal extensively)

Best Regards,

Dr. Carmo D'Cruz.
currently visiting Bombay, India

Doctor Carmo Dcruz:

Why do you still use a portuguese name if Portugal and our culture is so negative?
