Goa BJP MLA quits Assembly, party, joins Cong.

Panaji, Jan. 8 (PTI): Senior BJP MLA Manohar Azagaokar today resigned
from the Goa Assembly and the party, less than a week after Town and
Planning Minister Antanasio Monserratte quit the cabinet. He has
joined the Congress after Goa Speaker Fransisco Sardinha accepted his
resignation from the State Assembly.

Azagaokar, who represents Dhargalim constituency in north Goa,
tendered his resignation to the Speaker this morning and was joined by
Monserrate himself in the speaker's chamber.

Chief Minister Pratapsinh Rane is yet to make a formal announcement on
acceptance of resignation of Monseratte.

With Azagaokar resigning, the strength of the BJP in the state
Legislative Assembly has dipped to 14, as two of its MLA stand
disqualified, the Congress has 18 MLAS, NCP has two, MGP one and
independent one.

Azagaokar will join the Congress along with several BJP workers from
his constituency, sources close to him said.
