Hi Gabe
Thanks for the excellent BBC article on the labour situation in the Philippines and the exodus of skilled labour. I do not know the answer to your question if this echoes the steady Goan exodus from Goa but yes, virtually every Goan family has relatives abroad. However, I doubt that institutions in Goa, like hospitals have had to close for lack of skilled labour but I stand corrected.

For everyone leaving Goa for the West or to the Gulf, or to work on cruise liners etc, a steady labour supply from other parts of India seems available as in the hospitality/tourist sector. Also, those who get to the West tend to prioritise taking their families across as soon as possible, but I am aware of the family separation problem especially for seafarers.

Whenever I have raised the issue of doctor depletion among those of Indian origin, with so many leaving India until the recent change in the UK, I was told that the doctor supply in India was so great that the exodus to the UK and America made no tangible difference in India. Whether this is true or false, I am not certain but perhaps some doctors on Goanet may throw some light on this issue.
Regards
Cornel
