14 'feared dead' in sinking off Kuwait

KUWAIT CITY: The Indian embassy in Kuwait Saturday confirmed the news of
the sinking of the Indian ship, MSV Jaya Krishna Sagar, off shores of
Kuwait on Dec 27, 2006, in which 14 people are feared dead. The
shipwreck was sighted by a passing Norwegian ship that arrived just in
time to save two crew members of the sunken ship. Both of them are said
to have arrived in Bombay safely. Meanwhile, the US Navy divers,
conducting a search for dead bodies, have found the remains of the ship
captain Dalsut Vittal. The remains will be shipped to Bahrain Sunday.

The Indian ship, according to embassy sources, with 16 people on board,
was bound for Iraq from Sharjah, when the mishap occurred. The cause of
the wreck is yet unknown. There are conflicting reports regarding the
nature of the vessel with some Indian media saying it was a cargo ship
and some calling it a cruise liner, belonging to Bombay's Thadia scion
family. The Indian embassy in Kuwait will be in touch with their
counterparts in Bahrain "to offer any assistance needed." The embassy
sources said more official information will be revealed Sunday. No
explanation was offered as to why there was a delay in knowing about the
mishap that occurred more than a week ago.
