There was a time, many "susegad" eons ago, when a belligerent Goan could
merrily go about doing cartwheels above water, switch baits under water, and
jeeringly steer by predatory jaws. With the advent of Goanet, the water has
become more bellicose, unpredictably deep, with sharks lurking down-under
and stinger rays enforcing curfews. Every now and then, someone manages to
leap about causing rip-currents, and is either swept away, stung in flight,
or ripped apart.
If safety is in numbers, Goans appear to steer away from the schooling
mentality and prefer the solitary ethos of the agnatha. The agnatha is a
fish that a) lacks a jaw and bony skeleton, b) turns predatory by attaching
itself to other fish and c) wards off predators by swiftly tying itself into
a knot to discharge a noxious slime.
Although we have not evolved from the agnatha, somehow, it seems, we have
endeared ourselves to the third characteristic in order to
effectively cope with fellow agnathas and chondrichthyes (sharks) :)
