Tell me, how many people were "born in Goa in the pre-1961 period"? A
shrinking and vanishing number. And btw, not all (infact, not most)
share the Portuguese vision of things... many felt discriminiated
against. While it's easy for the beneficiaries of Portuguese rule to
be Lusostalgic, see the harsh and realistic rural-Goa experiences
described for instance by a Domnic Fernandes (unfortunately, most
don't have a voice to tell 'their side').
In addition, one may add that a patent brandmark of those wanting to
control the debate in Goa has been their very exlusionary trends.
Either you are not born in Goa. Or your not born in pre-1961 Goa. Or
you don't speak Portuguese. Or your not a Catholic. Or your not a
practising Catholic. Or you're a son of "cooks and butlers". Or you
come from the "wrong" caste. Or you come from the "wrong" side of the
"right" caste group (such as, a kashti bamon or a Bardezkar). And so
on....
How exclusionary can we get, in the attempt to just rig the debate in
our favour? As for me, I just think it's a joke... FN
