Much of the current angst against "Nehru's action" stems from the fact that
Goans were not allowed
to vote their destiny after Dec 1961. Had there been an opinion poll, say in
1962, Goans could
have been presented choices about their future. It is likely they would have
voted to become a
part of India or made some other democratic choice. Had there been a vote,
those who did not like
its outcome would have nevertheless been forced to live with its consequences.
But there was no
vote, hence the residual and lingering angst.
Another sore point, is native Goans were overlooked for prominent jobs. This
theme repeats itself
today in the Goans versus non-Goans discussions.
