KONKNNI MARTIR FLORIANO VAZ PUROSKAR
During the 1986 language agitation a youth by the name Mr. Floriano Vaz was
shot down on 20 December 1986 at Gogol, Margao. He was the first martyr
among the six more persons from Agacaim who laid their lives for the cause
of Konknni. Due to their sacrifice Konknni became the State Language of
Goa. Unfortunately no one remembers Floriano Vaz who was shot dead in broad
daylight. On 20th December 2006 his sacrifice completed 20 years.
To commemorate Floriano's sacrifice for his mother tongue, Thomas Stephens
Konknni Kendr (TSKK), Alto Porvorim has instituted an award called KONKNNI
MARTIR FLORIANO VAZ PUROSKAR to the best Konknni book in Roman script
published in the calendar year. The award consists of cash Rs. 5,000/- and
a memento.
Mr. Ashok Chodankar's Book "Jivit Fulum-di Somestanchem" has been selected
for Konknni Martir Floriano Vaz Puroskar for the year 2006. The award will
be given during a public function on 4 February 2007 which will be held at
Grace Church Hall, Margao at 5 p.m. Mr. Antonio Gauncar will be the Chief
Guest. All those who care for Floriano's sacrifice and support Konknni in
Roman script are cordially invited to attend the function. The function is
open for the public.
