In a recent post Gilbert Lawrence cites Dr. Gaitonde as an example of the freedom fighters who "sacrificed their personal interests" for the sake of Goa's freedom.

Indeed Dr. Gaitonde is an excellent example of those very few genuine Goans who fought the Portuguese. However, and contrary to the lies propagated around this issue, most "freedom fighters" were non-Goan Indian troublemakers who would infiltrate Goa's borders just to make life difficult to the Portuguese Goan authorities and provoke incidents, in exchange for a bowl of rice. Some Goans instantly became freedom fighters on 19th December 1961. They have been fighting bravely ever since, to get "freedom fighter pensions", university seats for their children and other priviledges.

What GL did not say, unfortunately, is that a few years after the end-result of his struggle, Dr. Gaitonde left his "liberated" Goa and settled in London, disillusioned with the course of events and the ways of the "liberators".

Makes one meditate on the nature of the events of December 19th. Liberation? Of sorts....
