HELPLINE FOR PEOPLE IN DISTRESS LAUNCHED AT XAVIERS
The Abbé Faria Post Graduate Department of Psychology, St. Xavier's College,
Mapusa, Goa organizes various activities that are aimed towards the
providing psychological services to various sections of society. After
launching its " Consultancy Services", " Counselling in Schools" programme,
the Department is now all set to launch a "Helpline for people in Distress"
Despite its apparently privileged position in terms of its economy,
environment and overall health infrastructure, mental illness is at least as
much of a problem (if not more so) in Goa as elsewhere. The statistics
available from Goa are concrete evidence of these problems. According to a
common estimate, at any one time 10 per cent of the population has mental
health problems serious enough to warrant care; recent evidence suggests
that this figure may be closer to 15 per cent. One major reason for this is
that people still fear the stigma attached to mental illness and hence often
fail to report it or to seek help.
The helpline will be open 24 hours and will provide tele counselling to
people in distress in Goa. The helpline will provide an opportunity for
people in distress to discuss their problems pertaining to stress,
adjustment, relationship, pressure, frustration, depression and various
other psychological problems and receive help.
The helpline no. is 9822091803
