Tiatro "Daddy" in Kuwait.

I am sure everyone will know who the tiatrist Samuel Carvalho is. Hailing from Majorda Salcette Goa, Samuel is currently one of the well known Goan Stage writers, Directors and Actors. Exactly a year ago he came to Kuwait to stage his all ladies show and returned back to Goa with a sense of total satisfaction after giving a very good performance of his show. This time on 16th February 2007 he is coming back to Kuwait with yet another good Tiatro “Daddy” which is acclaimed as one of the season’s best Tiatros. In all 52 shows of this Tiatro were held in Goa besides 12 in Mumbai and now to satisfy the tastes of his audience who are eagerly waiting to witness “Daddy”, Samuel Carvalho is going to stage this Tiatro not only in Kuwait on 16th of next month but also in other parts of the Gulf prior to Kuwait. This Tiator will be staged at Hawally A/C Hall, starting at 3.30 p.m. According to information, Daddy is Samuel’s third drama, the first being 'Hem Tumkam Sogleank' while in between he produced "Portugues Goykar" which was staged all over Goa and in some of the countries in the Gulf as well. Samuel is not a fresher in Kuwait, in fact he worked in Kuwait for many years for M/s Al Riyadh Trading Co. from the time he landed in Kuwait in 1991 after the invasion and liberation of Kuwait and left Kuwait for good almost after a decade. During his residence in Kuwait he acted in some of the Tiatros organized by the Kuwait Goan tiatrists, one being that of Anthony de Majorda. First time in his lifetime he acted in Goa for Patrick Dourado’s "Noketr" and gained tremendous goodwill and abundant appreciation from the audience. His favourite role is that of a villain but he is also known as a good character actor. As a tiatrist he acted for many of the top directors namely C. D. Silva, Anthony San, Milagres de Chandor and Comedian Agostinho.

This will be the second time he is touring Kuwait with his own troupe and own drama comprising all the topmost artistes namely Trio Kings (Anthony-Joaquim-Jr. Rod), Wilmix and Sharon, Mathew, Meena Leitao, Joe Rose, Felina, Roma, Shrutika, comedians Selvy and Agostinho and three best local artistes Michael D’Silva, Sanny de Quepem and Rosary Ferns. Musical score for this Tiatro will be provided by Agnelo Dias and Norman Cardoso who will accompany the artistes. Stage setting by Santana SPA. Mike System by John Furtado. Organisers: Xavier Dias (St. Cruz), Mathew Goes (Colva) and Leper Manuel (Cortalim).

According to information, a portion of the profit derived from this Tiatro in Kuwait will go for the benefit of one young handicapped and crippled girl from St. Cruz Ilhas, Goa. This young girl is none other than the beloved niece of the late Francisco Araujo who was hanged in Kuwait a few months before the invasion of Kuwait. The organizers are hell bent to help this young girl who needs so much of love and care. She is totally deformed physically. After her uncle Francisco Araujo was hanged in Kuwait, Francis’ brother Daniel and the father of the handicapped girl who was also working in Kuwait died leaving the deformed girl’s plight in misery. I am sure many of our Goans are aware of the events taken place those days and what led Francisco Araujo to go to the gallows. I still remember how in big number Goans came for his funeral in Kuwait City Church and how local English Press highlighted in front pages his funeral. I was one of the persons responsible to organize his funeral and burry his body by lowering his coffin into the grave at Shuleibhikat Cemetry. I still remember how almost every Goan that time praying for him and also praying to God to give Francis courage to face this death. And as per Fr. Pinto who witnessed his death as a representative of Catholic Church, the late Francis never trembled nor was afraid to face the gallows. His last words were “Oh Jesus, Help me to face this death”. And actually Jesus helped Francis to face the gallows with courage. Normally according to the officials close to the gallows, those persons facing the hangings show lot of resentment and opposition to move to the gallows but in the case of Francis Araujo, he did not resist but walked peacefully to the gallows, of course to the surprise of hangmen. May his soul rest in peace and may God give wisdom to the audience to patronize Daddy so that it gets good profit to ameliorate the sufferings of the deformed niece of Francisco Araujo.

A. Veronica Fernandes,
