Daniel F. D'Souza is a well-known Goan journalist regularly writing for Goan English and Konkani newspapers and magazines. He writes weekly column in Goan Observer. He also writes regularly for Gulab Monthly Konkani Magazine. He works for Marmagoa Potr Trust and edits its Magazine. He resides in Vasco near the Church along with his College Professor wife and school going daughter though he is from Saligao Bardez. In Vasco he is taking active part in local affairs. He is a strong supporter of Goa, Goans, Goan causes and Konkani and takes active part in all the activities related to Goa. He regularly writes reviews on Tiatro staged in Goa. Similarly he wrote a review in Goan Observer on Daddy which I am reproducing it herebelow. I am sure the Kuwait Goans will find this review interesting and know something more in advance about Daddy. According to the organisers, the sale of tickets is going well, yet to avoid last minute disappointment, it is better to book your seat in advance.

With the exception of 3 artistes Hazl, Anil Kumar and Fatima, the entire troupe that acted in Goa is intact. Hence, it will be a very intersting Tiatro to watch.

Daddy – a suspense story with many twists & turns.

    Daniel F. de Souza

The title ‘Daddy’ for a tiatr sounds quite unconventional and gives the prospective tiatr goer hardly any chance to speculate on the storyline. But, in the given circumstances and considering the unusual title all credit goes to Samuel Carvalho the playwright & director for having done a neat job in producing an absorbing play which holds the viewer under a suspense spell till the last scene.

Story:

‘Daddy’ is all about a happily married couple awaiting the arrival of their first child. The father Jimmy (Mathew Araujo) is all excited and happy about the whole thing that he is soon to become a father so is his wife Tina (Roma). Equally happy and excited is Mathew’s mother (played by Fatima) on her prospects of becoming a grandmother. Mathew seems confident that the child will be a baby boy and has come down all the way from the States of America to be present at birth of his first child. But his happiness and joy is short lived, Tina delivers a baby girl no doubt, but the baby is born with a deformity. She is lame in one leg. Jimmy’s high hopes and plans are dashed to the ground in one instant. He refuses to accept the reality and makes a turn around depriving the innocent child of his fatherly love and affection. He leaves the child and his wife with his mother back home and flies back to the States. The mother and the grandmother shower all of their love and affection on the new born (Child artist Hazel). She grows up into a pretty young girl all of fifteen. But she has still not seen who her father is and longs to see him. She is under the impression that her father loves her and is eager to see her, till one fine day a casual telephone call from her father shatters her beyond consolation.

It is here that the story takes a different turn altogether and revolves round the young girl and the fate that awaits her ahead. But then one day Jimmy surprises all by flying down home unannounced from the States to be with his family after fifteen long years. But, then that’s not the only surprise….he has a much bigger surprise in store for his wife and mother. What could this surprise be? Well I can’t reveal it…for it will be giving too much away and taking the charm out of the suspense story that is weaved carefully by Samuel Carvalho. ‘Daddy’ thereafter goes to keep the viewer fully engrossed as the story takes many twists and turns, some tragic and some humiliating. But the suspense is what makes the tiatr tick like a time bomb waiting to explode. And the suspense does explode in the last scene sending shock waves. While the tiatr audience is generally treated to a happy ending, ‘Daddy’ goes a step forward and breaks the tradition…..the story ends on a sad note. That’s all I can say. ‘Daddy’ has all the required ingredients to make it a ‘must see’ show this season. Don’t miss it….

Performance:

Fatima as Jimmy’s mother and Roma as her daughter-in-law combine extremely well to give a pleasing performance. The relationship between the both is shown very cordial and friendly and not the traditional hostile kind. Roma has given a very good performance in the challenging role with equally good rendition of songs and kantos. Fatima as the mother is natural in her character role and her dress code too is appropriate. Mathew Araujo is very stylish as Jimmy in his dress sense and delivery of dialogues and is turning out to be a fine actor with every performance. Anil Kumar playing the role of Dr. Savio is convincing and natural while Sharon and Wilson playing an expatriate husband and wife duo are very natural, and add a lot of punch to the plot. Sharon is very convincing in her special role and her delivery of dialogues is good. The playwright Samuel playing the character role of ‘Gomantak’ with a negative touch is realistic. A fine performance Samuel! Child artist Hazel bowls you over with her polished performance as the handicapped child bringing tears to your eyes. Specially watch her in the scene how she confronts her grandmother after she listens to the phone conversation from her father. It is sure to moisten your eyes. Felina in the supportive role has also given good account of her talents.

Comedy:

The comedy in ‘Daddy’ is lively and entertaining right from the very first scene. Joe Rose, Comedian Agostinho (Dempo) and Comedian Ambe (Timblo) sends peals of laughter with their fine combination and comedy stunts. The presence of Joe Rose in the comedy role lends a lot of punch to the entire comedy and one is reminded of the tiatrs of the olden days. Watch the scene when Joe Rose as the father of Dempo & Timblo gets married for the third time. So also the road scene with Gomantak & Joe Rose seating on a bench and the conversation that follows is really humorous. The comedy is well scripted and there is no room for any untoward depiction giving the audience room to laugh from the very first episode till the end of the show. Versatile actor Joe Rose should accept more such comedy roles in tiatrs more often.

Songs:

Daddy is complimented with a good number of solos, duets, trios and quintet. There are fairly good ‘kantos’ too keeping the traditional style of the tiatr. Osvi sings two delightful solos on sensible topics, so does Jr. Rod sing one good solo paying rich tribute to parents. Decent solos by Wilmix, Sharon, Roma, Felina, are adding value to the play as also the comedy solo ‘football’ by Joe Rose. The decent solo ‘Practice what you preach’ by Wilmix is thought provoking. The duets by Joe Rose –Roma, and Wilmix-Sharon are worth going miles to listen. Wilmix-Sharon’s duet highlighted the Mopa airport and hence was an instant hit with the audience. Comedy Quintet by Joe Rose, Fatima, Roma, Anil & Felina is very lively. Trio Kings Joaquim-Jr.Rod-Anthony as usual delights the audience with two excellent trios. The first one is on a very good topic on the past and present Prime Ministers of India and it received a thunderous applause.

Music:

Agnelo Dias and Norman Cardozo together have scored the musical notes for the tiatr. But, it is Norman Cardozo who has set new standards in background music for others to follow. His background music for ‘Daddy’ is simply superb and makes one feel that background music for tiatrs is finally on the right track. Good work Norman, keep it up. Xavier Paklo de Moira on the drums has given good support with his innovations and slick stick work. He was specially a hit with the small children in the audience who were surrounding him during the show and watching him play from close.

Lights & Stage Setting:

The lights were handled with a professional touch. The special backdrop showing a painting of a palatial bungalow looked very impressive and the lighting enhanced it’s beauty giving it a three dimensional look. ‘Daddy’ is a well scripted and well directed show, with fine performance. Go, watch ‘Daddy’ with your entire family.
