Hi Everyone,

I do not understand why Selma is so sentimental about the Goan Gulfie.

Its just because the opportunity to be an easy-money Gulfie exists, many
talented Goans and Malyalees do not live up to their full expectations -
they quit school early and become crate-carrying Gulfies. If Selma liked the
life and career of a Gulfie so much, then why did she and her husband jump
at the opportunity to move to North America ? Yet she does not like any
criticisms of the Gulfie. We should not encourage our promising Goan Youth
to become Gulfies - instead they should be encouraged to stay in school, get
into college, preferably a professional college (like IIT), get a
professional degree and become captains of Industry. Its a vicous cycle that
is being propagated in Goa and the Gulf - first the Fathers were Gulfies,
then the Children become Gulfies. Its the second generation of Gulfies that
we now see in the Gulf. Fortunately some Goan Gulfies have moved on to the
UK, USA, Canada, Australia, etc. Although I have had a number of
disagreements with Sunith Velho in the past, I can't thank him enough for
putting together that illustrative phrase "Crate-Carrying Gulfie".

For the greater Glory of our beloved Goa, we should continue to malign
Gulfies (and Shippies too). Young Goan girls should turn down marriage
proposals from these guys.

Best Regards,

Dr. Carmo D'Cruz

improper to malign the Gulf Goan

Dear Eugene,

I don't want to give the wrong impression that Cecil has maligned the
Gulfie. In his capacity as a humorist he was caricaturing the uneducated man
who goes to the Gulf and makes a lot of money but carries a chip on his
shoulder.

Although the caricature offends me, I do apologise to Cecil if I have given
the impression that Cecil has done anything more than present a this
caricature which unfortunately prevails in Goa.

Selma
