*For the first time ever, the village of Aldona will play host to an
e-waste awareness-cum-collection drive over the next two weeks.*
The initiative is part of efforts by the Lions Club of Aldona in
association with Group TenPlus, the sole authorized agency for
collection of e-waste in the state of Goa. While most villages have been
focusing on collection of dry waste and wet waste, electronic junk
continues to get piled up in homes and offices with no means of its
disposal, except to a pollution-raising illegal scrap yard.
The Lions Club of Aldona has agreed to give its premises for two days -
January 25 and January 26 to people from Aldona and surrounding villages
to bring in their e-waste. Group TenPlus will then arrange for its
pickup and send it to Roorkee, Uttarakhand, where the e-waste will be
recycled by Attero Recycling.
The St Thomas church, Aldona, and its parish priest, Rev Fr Amandio
Valladares has also contributed to the awareness campaign with
announcements at Sunday mass, while the list of e-waste that can be
collected and cannot be collected has been pasted on the church's notice
board.
"We have been picking up e-waste generated by corporates and industries
in Goa so far. Social clubs like the Rotary club of Ponda and IMA had
conducted an e-waste awareness-cum-collection drive in Ponda. The Aldona
drive is the first we are having in Bardez in co-ordination with the
Lions club. People from the surrounding villages of Aldona can also come
in with their e-waste," said Ashley Delaney of Group TenPlus.
The Lions Club of Aldona's social initiative is headed by president Ln
Hector Fernandes, secretary Ln Renato Veloso and treasurer Ln Avinash
Mesquita.
