I guess the "smart" v/s "dumb" money is not the paper note, bank draft or the
gold coin / bar that one possesses. But it is what one does with the money!
If the money, from whatever source, is put to good use and grows, the money
becomes "smart money". And if good money is put to bad use, it becomes "dumb
money."

Recently in the news was India's Tata Steel buying the steel company in Canada.
A history of Tata(s) was outlined in the magazine story. It reports, the
great-grandfather (who landed penniless in Bombay from Persia) made his first
money with the British, smuggling hashish to China and then later boot-legging.
Yet from that money, Tata bought (then built) the ships they traded, land in
and around Bombay ... and India ... and the rest is history.

The same could happen to the earnings of the (forced) Goan emigres, be they
skilled or unskilled workers.

If the money (remittances) was / is used to buy / build the house and educate
the children, the money becomes "good money" and contributes to Goa's and the
family's economy and growth.

If the money was / is used for liquor, cigarettes and matka, it is "easy come
and easy go" money. Goan "smart money" very easily becomes "dumb money" when
spent on Johnny Walker - Red, Black or Blue (latest craze among Goans).
Obviously here, the money goes down the toilet - literally and figuratively.
Similarly "good money" can easily go up in smoke just to show a little sokku
ani ahankar (boastful and cocky).

It does not take three generations to pull oneself by the boot straps. Most
(successful) Goans have done it within one generation and that too with the
parents / grandparents a "graduate" of primary or secondary school. The same
is true of the millions of American immigrants, irrespective from which corner
of the world they started.

The secret, is PERSPIRATION (busting one's butt), ... NOT having a "me smart"
attitude ... and dealing with money "SMARTLY".
Kind Regards, GL

Goans can earn a lot of money by selling their land or going to the gulf (By
the way I think even in gulf there are all kinds of jobs) but one must note
that there is smart money and there is dumb money. Just money is no good.

It is how one can carve one's life and the life of one's future generations
that matters. What are one's fears, can one get one over one's fears? What are
one's insecurities? It is these issues that Goans have to learn about.
